06. dropcast, a typeface

This is the type specimen poster for Dropcast. The other specimen is a Viewmaster reel that is currently in progress, but will be done in time for the exhibition opening.

The character set for Dropcast, Base.
The Dropcast typeface, is inspired by the hand lettering on a poster by David Hockney in which he depicts characters as objects situated in a physical space. Dropcast consists of five separate fonts that can be set together: the base, the right fitted shadow, the left fitted shadow, and the two drop shadows. The letterforms are designed to be typeset to appear as objects on a landscape. The stereoscopic images used for the type specimen reel enhance the multi-part construction of the type face, and its sense of dimensionality. Viewmaster reels typically show photographs of tourist sites such as monuments and landscapes. They depict souvenir imagery of iconic representational forms, much like the typeface does.

An early sketch for the typeface.
