04. cubic, a typeface study

Cubic Typeface Study [developed as an independent study with Cyrus Highsmith, 2007]
The Cubic typeface characters are derived from the edges of a cube. Initially inspired by Sol Lewitt’s 122 Incomplete Open Cubes, the study evolved into an exploration of dimensional type in several different forms. One iteration of the typeface makes a flat surface appear dimensional, while another abstracts the forms on the flat surfaces of the cube so that the perspectival views become legible.

Two views of the Cubic face applied to wooden blocks. As a flat plane the characters become interlocking abstractions.
